90 medical department IV Jttein'cal Department Report on the state of this Department made by Professor Feryusson the Dean of the Year at the Distribution of Prizes April 27 1S49 His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury in the Chair My Lord Archbishop It is my duty as Dean of the Medical Department to report upon the condition of the School during the twelve months just passed away have much gratification in stating that the School of Medicine in King's College has never been in more satisfactorv condition Nearly twenty years ago when Medicine was first taught within these walls this De- partment opened under most favourable auspices but its success did not continue to keep pace with the flourishing condition of the rest of the College Within the Inst few years however the reputation of the School of Medicine in this College has been gradually and steadily on the rise and at the resent period the Medical Department partakes of that general prosperity which prevails throughout this great institution In 1839 the number of Matriculated Mi-dual Students of the College was sixty-live in 1849 it is one hundred and fifty It is my pleasing duty to report that the attendance of the Pupils during the year has given much satisfaction to ×™ Professors and that their general conduct has been equal to that which has always characterized the Pupils of King's College This Report is not made at random or with view to gratify those who are particularly interested It is well known that system of superintendence is in force in this College which enables the Professors individually and col- lectively to become familiar with the talents habits and general character of each Pupil Six times at least during
