30 annual report 1819 Fencing Military Drawing Surveying and instruction in the principles of Field and Permanent Fortification espe- cially the former The Art of War including outlines of its history The Council have the pleasure of stating that they have secured the services of Captain Walker of Her Majestv 39th Regiment as the first Professor of Military Science The Military Department has opened this week witli several Matriculated Students The Council forbear to expatiate on the great accession of influence which is likely to accrue to the College or on the benefit which will be conferred upon the Army and the country at large by bringing young men who are hereafter to fill most important parts in life within the range of Collegiate system based avowedly upon the union of every branch of secular instruction with the doctrines and discipline of the Church of England Another important addition has been made during the past year to the Classes of the College namely the establish- ment of Evening Lectures on scientific subjects especially adapted to those whose occupations during the day preclude the possibility of their devoting themselves to the pursuit of subjects so well calculated to elevate and improve the mind of all but heretofore too exclusively confined to those whose profession in life renders knowledge of them indispensable These Lectures will also afford valuable opportunity to those Students of King's College itself who belong to the Departments in which scientific instruction of this uature does not form prominent feature of the course The opening lecture at these Evening Classes was given by the Reverend the Principal on "The relation which scientific pursuits bear to our holy religion and was followed by 40 Lectures on the following subjects on Manufactures and Machinery on Public Health
