annual report 1849 29 tion to those branches which have bearing more or less direct upon the strictly professional studies 2d -Direct Professional Studies 1st -General Knowledge History both ancient and modern the history of England and its dependencies including the rise and progress of its constitution in Church and State Geography physical and political as well as descrip- tive and more particularly that of the whole British Empire and of the rest of the world as far as time and circumstances may allow general knowledge of the History of Literature particularly English Literature with exercises directed to the acquirement of fluency and correctness in English composition Latin so far as to enable the Student to construe Caesar Livy and Horace correctly and to lay good foundation on which Student may hereafter if so disposed buildup knowledge of Spanish and Italian The French Language so as to be written and spoken correctly the German likewise provided there be time Algebra Euclid Plane Trigonometry &c Natural Philosophy To these mav be added as time and circumstances will allow Chemistry Geology the Workshop &c 2d -Direct Professional Studies Instruction in the Composition of an Army with detail of the respective duties of all persons belonging to it from the highest to the lowest Tactics comprising under that head the composition armament and various functions of each of the three forces which compose an army viz Artillery Cavalry and Infantry
