20 annual report 19 diligence and success in the prosecution of their studies this he attributes in great measure to the encouragement held out to them by the foundation of Scholarships and to the stimulus given by recent regulation by which prizes are awarded to deserving Pupils each Term instead of once in the year as formerlv It is highlv gratifying to find that those who have been elected to the Scholarships have been able to sustain in wider field of competition the reputation which they hail acquired in the School Mr Maurice Day who was elected Senior Classical Scholar of King's College School in 1846 has gained four Scholarships in the University of Oxford-an open Scholarship successively at Exeter and University Colleges the Hertford Scholarship of 1848 and the Ireland Scholarship of 1849 second pupil Senior Classical Scholar in IS 17 has been recently electea Scholar of Balliol third Senior Classical Scholar in 1848 is Scholar of Wadham College and fourth elected on this very day Senior Classical Scholar for 1849 has within the last few weeks gained Scholarship at Lincoln College In fact the three senior bovs actuallv in the School are Scholars in the Univer- sity of Oxford It may here be mentioned that on the recommendation of the Principal new arrangement has been made in reference to the Choir The practice hitherto has been to hire certain number of Choristers at considerable expense merely for the Sunday Services The sum thus expended will in future be applied in such way as without losing sight of the im- portant duty in the Chapel and without in any way lowering the character of King's College School will confer very great benefit upon deserving class Twelve boys of suitable age sons of gentlemen belonging to the learned professions with decided preference for the sons of clergymen will be elected as Choral Exhibitioners They will receive free education including musical instruction in the School so long as their conduct is good and their services can be made avail- able in the Chapel Choir They will be required to attend during the Term at the Evening daily Service and at the Morning and Afternoon Services on Sunday
