annual report 1819 23 the sanction and under the superintendence of the Principal set on foot an evening school for indigent children and adults They attend each in turn to conduct the instruction It is obvious that such plan when fully organised must tend very much to further the practical working of the Theological Department towards training the Students for their future parochial labours The number of Students in the Department of General Literature and Science during the year has considerably exceeded that of any year since the foundation of the College The good conduct and diligence of the Students continue un- abated The results of the system of instruction as tested at the Universities have been as usual satisfactory in propor- fcion to the number of those who have taken their degrees during the year At Cambridge four late Students of King's College have been classed amongst the Wranglers three have been elected to Fellowships one at Trinity second at St John's and third at Jesus College Nor is it at the Universities alone that the seed sown at King's College London produces fruit As an illustration of the varied utility of the system and of its adaptation to different callings in life it is worthy of mention that the gallant Major Edwardes the hero of Moul- tan passed three years in this Department and became and still continues an Associate of the College-a distinction on which as he has himself lately declared in the midst of the honours bestowed upon him he still reflects with gratitude and pride Two other officers who have distinguished them- selves highly in the same campaign Lieutenant Pollock and Lieutenant Herbert the gallant defender of Attock were likewise Students of this College The Council have instituted new Professorship in con- nexion with this Department that of the Law of Nations The immediate occasion for this step was the necessity of pro- viding for the instruction of eight young Egyptians sent over by the Viceroy of Egypt and about to be placed at King's College to prepare themselves for the career of Diplomatic
