22 ANNUAL REPORT satisfactory to the Principal and Professors and must tend to increase the confidence which King's College already enjoys The success which has already attended this new branch of our Institution encourages the hope that in proportion as it becomes more extensively known still larger intlux of Students may be looked for Several Students in the Depart- ment of General Literature and Science are qualifying them- selves for the Associateship with view of proceeding on to the Theological Department and there is reason to believe that large number of persons not yet Members of the College are preparing themselves for the examination which in their case must precede their admission The Class of Theological Candidates who are in training with this object within the College is increasing and some of the Students have already passed into the Theological Department properly so called The Council cannot quit their Report of this Department without noticing the highly satisfactory results which have followed the reception of certain number of Theological Students as Residents within the walls of the College The great advantages secured by this peculiarly English form of tin Collegiate system are fully appreciated by the Residents and are not without beneficial influence upon the other Students The Council regret that want of space forbids their offering the same accommodation to very many who would gladly avail themselves of the privilege if placed within their reach In compliance with wish spontaneously expressed by the resident Theological Students the Council have made arrange- ments for daily evening Service throughout each term This Service in addition to its direct advantage as means of social worship will have the further good effect of giving increased opportunities for Congregational Singing and for practice in reading the Lessons The Rev Thomas Markby who has succeeded Mr Plumptre as Censorin the College has been appointed to the Office of Reader and Mr John Monk 1s been appointed Superintendent of the Choir The Students have also with the kind permission and co- operation of the Vicar of St Martin's in the-Fields and with
