medical department 55 Candidates wlio have had an University education and have the degree of Λ Β or as well as that of will he preferred but liberal education and competent knowledge of the Greek and Latin languages are indispensably requisite in every candidate and the greater the attainments of the candidates in various branches of science in addition to competent profes- sional knowledge the more eligible will they subsequently be deemed for pro- motion in the service for selections to ill up vacancies will be guided more by reference to such acquirements than to mere seniority Before promotion from the rank of Assistant-Surgeon to any higher rank every gentleman must be prepared for such other examination as may be ordered before board of medical oiliccrs Section XXII REGULATIONS OF THE A1EDICAL DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY No person will be admitted as an Assistant-Surgeon in the Royal Navy who shall not produce certificate from one of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of London Edinburgh or Dublin of bis fitness for that office nor as Surgeon unless be shall produce diploma or certificate from one of the said Royal Colleges founded on an examination to be passscd subsequently to his ap- ointment of Assistant-Surgeon as to the candidate's fitness for the situa- tion of Surgeon in the Navy and in every case the candidate producing such certificate or diploma shall also undergo further examination before the Director-General of the Medical Department of tbe Navy touching his qualifi- cations in all the necessary branches and points of medicine and surgery for each of the steps in the Naval Medical Service Candidates will further be required to produce proof of having received preliminary classical cduca- tion and that they possess in articular competent knowledge of Latin also that they are of good moral character the certificate of which must be signed by the clergyman of the parish or by magistrate of the district That they have served an apprenticeship or have been engaged for not less than six months in Practical Pharmacy That their age is not less than twenty years nor more than twenty-four and that they are unmarried That they have actually attended hospital iu London Edinburgh Dublin Glasgow or Aberdeen for two years subsequently to the age of eighteen in which the average number of patients is not less than 150 That they have been engaged in actual dissections of the human body twelve months the cer- titicate of which from the teacher must state the number of subjects or parts dissected by the caudidate That they have attended lectures &c on the fol- lowing subjects at established schools of eminence by physicians or surgeons of tbe recognised Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons in the United Kingdom for periods not less than hercinunder stated observing however that such
