MEDICAL DEPARTMENT 99 resources at an early facile and most important period of life with little or none of that superintending care which is so essential at this juncture Alone at distance from home and surrounded by all the allurements of large town it is not to be wondered at that he has occasionally failed in his duty Many might have been saved from the first false step by the friendly admonition of some older head or from seeing the necessity of acting upon certain rules such as might prevail in well-conducted domestic establishment rcsi- deuce in rooms within the walls of College like this is well calculated to prove of service to youth on the threshold of manhood Here besides the comforts of well-ventilated and well-furnished apartment the Student has the watchful care of the authorities of the College When youth embarks on the sea of life he must not expect to carry along with him the indulgence-8-it may be the luxury-of his paternal home In Medicine he has hard and arduous struggle before him and the protecting and fatherly care of the Principal of King's College-the moral atmosphere in which he is placed will doubtless be of infinite value in fitting him for his proper sphere in after life This is theme on which much might be said but this is not the best opportunity for dwelling on topic of such importance Suffice it to say that the Professors are deeply sensible of the advantages which the Council of this College have conferred upon the Medical profession by the zealous and successful manner in which they have developed this truly valuable addition to the Medical Curriculum AVhile success attends Medical School much anxiety is necessarily felt when changes occur among the teachers Re- cently much esteemed member of our staff Mr Simon Assistant Surgeon to our Hospital and Demonstrator of Anatomy in the College was elected to an important appoint- ment in another school the same gentleman has been subse- qucntly chosen as Officer of Health to the City of London and his place in this College has been filled by Mr Henry Lee An important acquisition to our Physiological Department has been made in the person of Mr Bowman who during the past
