MEDICAL DEPARTMENT 87 IV Jttciucal Department Report on the state of this Department made by Dr Budd the Dean of the Year at the Distribution of Prizes May 1848 llis Grace the Arch- bishop of Canterbury in the Chair My Lord Archbishop It gives the Professors of the Medical Department much satisfaction to be able to report to your Grace and to the Members of the Council that in the academical year which has just elapsed the Medical Depart- ment has shared in the general prosperity of the College The number of Students who have joined this Department since the Professors presented their last Report equals that of the preceding year and both the new students and the old have with few exceptions been praiseworthy in their conduct and have laboured earnestly to prepare themselves for the exercise of their future profession An important event of the past year for the Medical Depart- ment of the College is the building of larger and more com- modious rooms for the Anatomical Class and of additional rooms for the residence of Medical Students It has long been the wish of the Medic 11 Professors to have greater number of the Medical Students resident in the College so as to be more fully under the influence of the collegiate life and disci- line They have long entertained the opinion in common they believe with most persons who have considered the sub- ject that the Medical Student has hitherto been left too much to his own guidance The means of acquiring know- ledge has been amply provided for him The competition between the different Medical Schools has imparted zeal to the teachers and has led to various improvements in the mechanism of teaching But to enable him in after life to acquire and retain the confidence and respect of all classes of society and
