70 applied sciences ance of the studies to which their attention is directed and to fix in their recollection the mechanical know ledge they acquire VI Land Surveying and Levelling This course comprises Railway surveying both by the Chain and Theodolite levelling in all its branches running out Rail- way curves staking out the line for the contractors calc'u- lating tbe cuttings and embankments It is strictly practical the Students are actually engaged in field operations which by the kindness of several noblemen and gentlemen in the neighbourhood of London who have given them access to their grounds they are enabled to carry on extensively The opportunities hereby offered are such as with fair dili gence and application will qualify Students to undertake at the end of their course whatever Railway surveying may oiler itself VII Geometrical Drawing This Course comprehends practical Geometry in the most extensive sense of the term Plane Geometry the delineation of plane figures and curves and generally the solution of all the problems re- quired in the practical arts the use of drawing instru- ments &c Solid or Descriptive Geometry including Projection Isometrical Projection perspective the construction of Mais Light and Shade and Drawing in the common accep- tation of the term as connected with the objects of this Department The examples selected for the Students are such as are con- nected with their future professional pursuits and it should be observed that this Course includes what is termed by the French Descriptive Geometry -Students of the third year may upon distinct appli cation to the Dean have the privilege of attending the Class of Landscape Drawing and Colouring as applied to Architec- tural Designs instead of the Class of Geometrical Drawing
