annual report 1818 With reference to the School Department of the College Dr Major the Head Master reports very favourably of the conduct and progress of the Classes The Pupils speaking in general terms have maintained their character for quiet and orderly deportment for respectful demeanour towards the Masters for kindness and cordialitv in their intercourse with each other and for honourable and gentlemanly principles and feelings laudable spirit of industry and desire for learning prevail amongst them of which it may be instanced as proof that the head form have voluntarily undertaken the study of Hebrew during the past year and ha pursued it with much interest and success Many Pupils of the School have participated in the honours recently gained in the Inner- sity examinations the fourth Wrangler above named with three others having been originally educated in the School It may also be mentioned thaC four of those who obtained honours at Cambridge were educated at Schools in union with King's College The new arrangement of the highest lass of the School announced in our last year's Report has been carried into effect and promises good results The periodical examina- tions of the Pupils in Mathematics and Arithmetic con- ducted with great ability by Professor O'Brien and Ιύ Τ Cock have already produced very remarkable im- provement in those important branches of instruction It will be gratifying to the General Court to be assured that the Scholarships which were bunded two years ago con- tinue to fulfil the design of their institution The number of Candidates for them in all the Departments of the College and in the School has been considerable particularly in the Department of General Literature and Science in which their number in the present year has amounted to nearly one- third of the Matriculated Students and when it is considered that no one is allowed to be competitor for any Scholarship unless he fulfils the condition of good conduct and of com- petent knowledge of Divinity just estimate will be formed of the beneficial intluence arising from these foundations
