22 annual report 1848 the College and accessible only through the College gates and that they have fitted up in suitable manner fourteen sets of furnished rooms for the reception of Theological Students The Residents are placed under strictly academical discipline they take all their meals together partly in the College Hall and partly in common room provided for their use The rooms are furnished in the plainest manner but with due attention to comfort Recurring now to the original Departments the Council call the attention of the General Court to the unprecedented in- crease which is observable in the number of Matriculated Stu- dents in the Department of General Literature and Science Some part of this result is owing probably to the relation in which this Department stands to the new ly instituted Depart- ment of Theology but much more to the established reputa- tion of the Professors and Lecturers by whom its studies arc directed and to the success which during many years has attended its Students when removed to the Universities In the University of Cambridge out of twenty-one former Students of King's College who took their degree at the last Bachelor of Arts Commencement no less than sixteen were named in the Mathematical Tripos nine were classed among the Wranglers and four among the Senior Opthnes Amongst those who thus distinguished themselves the fourth Wrangler was also second Smith's Prizeman and he was also one of two former Students who obtained first class in the Classical Tripos In the University of Oxford former Student of this Department has been elected Fellow of Exeter College and several have been elected to Scholarships in their respective Colleges In the Department of the Applied Sciences the number of Students compared with the list of last year is unaltered fact which considering the serious check liwh engineering works have of late experienced must be regarded as matter of surprise and congratulation The conduct of the present Students in this Department is perfectly satisfactory and the
