20 The following Report on the general state of the College was presented by the Council to the Annual General Court of Governors and Proprietors held on Friday the 14M of April 1848 His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury in the Chair The Council of King's College London in presenting their Seventeenth Annual Report have once more occasion to bear witness to the soundness of the principles upon which every branch of instruction is here cultivated and to point to the prosperity which has thus far attended the operations of the College as sufficient encouragement for persevering in the same system for the future The number of Students in most of the Departments either equals or exceeds that which uas announced in the last report The slight exceptions to this general increase only exemplify the liability to fluctuations to which so extensive an institution is at all times exposed especially during period of unusual commercial distress In the subjoined enumeration care has been taken as usual that the name of no Student or Pupil though attending different classes should be reckoned more than once Matriculated Students In the Theological Department 50 the Class of Theological Candidates In the Department of General Literature and Science 156 In the Department of Applied Sciences 71 In the Medical Department 137 Occasional Students 419 In various Classes exclusive of the Medieal 44 Medical 41 85 The School uPils 460 Total 964
