72 MEDICAL Ι Ε1' ΛIIΤ Μ ΕΝ Τ permitted to refer In former years Prizes and Certificates of Honour were awarded for proficiency in two or more subjects jointly this arrangement being adopted with view to pro- mote equal attention to all the subjects treated in each year The establishment of Scholarships having superseded these divisional Prizes it was deemed expedient to recommend to the Council the establishment of Prizes in individual subjects In order moreover to encourage the practical studies of the Hospital four new Prizes entitled the Medical and Surgical Clinical Prizes have also been established Before quit this subject of the encouragements and re- wards held out to the industry and good conduct of our Pupils it will be my pleasing duty to acknowledge with gratitude most liberal and unexpected addition to the Prizes of this year in the form of presentation to an Assistant Surgeon ship in the service of the East India Company placed at the disposal of the Principal by Mr John Cotton brother of Mr William Cotton the Member of the Council On behalf of the Medical Professors beg to offer our warm acknowledgments to the generous Donor and to the gentleman to whose good offices and timelv suggestion we are doubtless indebted for סס the gift The Professors after the most mature consideration determined to recommend to the Principal Mr Walter Batter- shell Gill as the gentleman best qualified hy his industry and acquirements and exemplary conduct to do justice to Mr Cotton's liberality The Principal was pleased to confirm our choice which has proved equally satisfactory to Mr Cotton cannot bring this Address to close without offering to your Lordship and to the Council the best congratulations of the Medical Professors on the present flourishing condition of the Medical as well as of all the other Departments of the Col- lege and our warm thanks for the kind attention they have always given to the suggestions we have had occasion to offer for increasing its efficiency and thereby raising the character of Medical Education not only within our own walls but wherever our example may extend
