MEDICAL DEPARTMENT 71 supporters have evinced no diminution of their interest in its welfare The Committee of Management ably supported by Mr Alderman Copeland its Chairman seconded by its inde- fatigable Deputy Chairman Mr Sambrooke continue to give the closest attention to its concerns and to promote its welfare by every means in their power The Annual Subscriptions are slowly on the increase and now amount exclusive of the £300 a-year from the Trustees of the Holborn Estate to £1 282 The Donations for the past year however were less than those for the year 1845 leaving the income inadequate to the expenditure by upwards of £6 10 The Committee of Management in their Report recently issued express confident reliance on the liberality of the public in providing the means of sustaining and even increasing its efficiency During the past year an appeal was made to the public on behalf of Building Fund to be devoted to the purchase of piece of ground immediately adjoining the Hospital aud for the erection upon it of some additions now urgently required to the existing building and ultimately of an entirely new structure The subscription to this fund was commenced in the hall in which we are now assembled under the presidency of his Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury The meeting which was honoured by the presence of His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge was addressed by several members of the Episcopal Bench and by many dis- tinguished laymen several of whom consented to allow their names to be enrolled as Subscription Committee of which the Duke of Cambridge condescended to act as Chairman The eiforts of this Committee have already sufficed to raise fund of nearly £4 000 Legal difficulties however have hitherto prevented them from completing the purchase of the ground but strong hopes are entertained that these difficulties will be speedily overcome Since the last distribution of Prizes in the Medical Depart- ment some changes have been made to which may be
