70 MEDICAL DEPARTMENT more commensurate with the increasing demands for accom- modation within its Avails Our means of instruction have been enlarged by the addi- tion during the past year of many valuable specimens and preparations to our Museums Among the Donations which are most deserving of notice may mention an extensive series of Birds from Australia and Van Diemen's Land pre- sented by King Esq and Atkins Esq series of dried plants from Southern Africa presented by the late lamented Duke of Northumberland several specimens of fruits and seeds by Professor Royle and Leach Esq valuable cast of the Plesiosaurus Hawkinsii by Janus Ten- nant Esq collections of Silurian fossils by Day Esq and Professor Rymer Jones of garnets from North America by the Rev Nicolay and geological specimens from New Zealand by Jukes Esq Considerable additions have also been made to the Ana- tomical Museum Though the aggregate increase during the past year has been unusually large the Museums thanks to the zeal and industry of Mr Masters were never in better order or so well arranged King's College Hospital continues to maintain its high repu- tation both as charity and as place of practical instruction The number of Patients who received relief during the year 1846 was 17 823 number exceeding by upwards of 700 that of 1845 and by nearly 000 that of 1844 The total number of In-Patients received into the wards since the spring of 1840 when the Hospital was first opened is 980 and the number of Out-Patients 80 116 Of the first class considerably more than one-half were admitted as urgent cases without requiring Governor's recommendation Of the Out-Patients an overwhelming proportion were also treated without bringing any letter of recommendation so that for all practical pur- poses the Hospital is Free Hospital The funds of the Hospital regret to say do not increase in the same proportion as its patients though its friends and
