MEDICAL DEPARTMENT 09 six other cases to defer them or in other words to make the obtaining of them contingent upon increased diligence and unusual punctuality of attendance during the ensuing Winter Session am bound however to add that whatever the dis- appointment which this decision may have occasioned the Professors have no reason to complain of the spirit in which that decision has been received and believe that the Reverend the Principal will confirm my statement that the conduct of our Pupils has been uniformly marked by respectful and cheerful submission to the authorities of the College-a sub- mission flowing from the consciousness that these necessary measures of discipline are dictated by sincere desire for their welfare In thus enforcing the discipline of which mention has so often been made in this place the Professors hope to obtain the support and approval of the parents and friends of the Pupils If were not restrained by obvious considerations might mention several gratifying instances of the excellent effect which this enforcement of discipline has had in converting care- lessness and idleness into exemplary and successful diligence The Pupils in residence within the walls of the College have conducted themselves as am authorized to state to the entire satisfaction of the Principal Last year my predecessor in office Dr Todd stated that he had reason to believe that arrangements were on the point of being made by the joint liberality of the Council and of tried friend and benefactor of the College for increasing the then existing accommodation for Resident Students The plan then proposed vas aban- doned on account of the great expense attending it but am happy to state that new and improved scheme is now under consideration which should it be found not to occasion too large an outlay will in all probability be very speedily put in execution and thus the Collegiate system which was first adopted by this College χν'ύ at length be carried out on scale more proportionate to the number of its Pupils and
