6S MEDICAL DEPARTMENT IV itlc&tcal Bcpnrtment Report on the state of this Department made by Dr Guy the Dean of the Year at the Distribution of Prizes April 24 1847 the Lord Bishop of London in the Chair My Lord -In presenting the Annual Report of the con- dition of the Medieal Department of this College in this the sixteenth vear of its existence my first duty is to oiler to your Lordship the best acknowledgments of the Professors for your kindness in presiding on this occasion and thus enhancing the value of the Prizes and Marks of Distinction which the friends and benefactors of the College and the liberality of the Council have provided as an encouragement to the exertions of our Pupils The Report at the Annual Court of Proprietors held yester- day in this room announced the gratifying fact that the number of Pupils in the several Departments of the College now ex- ceeds one thousand of which number those in attendance on the several Medical Classes formed upwards of 200 The exact numbers are-Matriculated Students 182 Occasional Students exclusive of Pupils of the Royal Academy and Surgeons in the Royal Navy 33 making total of 215 of whom 142 also attend the Hospital am happy to be able to speak in very favourable terms of the conduct and diligence of the great majority of our Pupils but your Lordship ill not be surprised to hear that among so large body few have been so far forgetful of their duty and true interest as to have neglected their studies and subjected themselves to censure Indeed in two instances it has been my painful duty as representing the body of Professors to refuse the usual Certificates of Attendance altogether and in
