KING'S COLLEGE Uon&on King's College was founded in 182S upon the following fundamental principle -That every system of general educa- tion for the youth of Christian community ought to com- prise instruction in the Christian religion as an indispensable part without which the acquisition of other branches of knowledge will be conducive neither to the happiness of the individual nor to the welfare of the State The following are extracts from the Royal Charter dated 14th August 1829 GEORGE THE FOURTH by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland King Defender of the Faith To all to whom these presents shall come greeting- Whereas the most Reverend Father in God our right trusty and right entirely beloved Councillor William Arch- bishop of Canterbury Primate of all England and Metropolitan our right trusty and right entirely beloved cousin John Henry Duke of Rutland knight of the most noble order of the Garter and the right reverend Father in God our right trusty and well-beloved Councillor Charles-James Bishop of London presented their petition to us setting forth that they together with divers others of our loving subjects had agreed to found College for the general education of youth either in the cities of London or Westminster or somewhere in the immediate neighbourhood thereof in which College the various branches of literature and science are intended to be taught and also the doctrines and duties of Christianity as the same are incul- cated by the United Church of England and Ireland That
