11 ANNUAL REPORT 18 IG It is with deep and sincere regret that the Council allude to the death of one of the most distinguished of their own body -one who may be considered the virtual Founder of the Cot- lege who watched over its interests for many years with parental solicitude and who lived just long enough to be aware of and cordially to approve the contemplated expansion of its sphere of action So strongly do the Council feel the peculiar claims of the Rev Dr D'Oyly to the affectionate respect and gratitude of the College that they have thought it right to order tablet to be erected to his memory in the College Chapel The Council have very reluctantly accepted the resignation of II Smith Esq their late excellent Secretary They cannot allow this occasion to pass without recording their sense of the zeal and efficiency with which this officer for seventeen years discharged the duties of his situation and of the cordial interest which he has manifested in the prosperity of the Institution It has been source of great satisfaction to the Council that they have secured for the important olfice of Secretary the services of Cunningham Esq gentleman who pos- sesses in an eminent degree all the requisite qualifications and who has already exerted his activity and talents to the great benefit of the College The Council have the pleasure of announcing the appoint- ment of Miller Esq formerly distinguished Student of the College to the Chair of Chemistry vacant by the death of the lamented Professor Daniell At the sugges- tion of the new Professor additional accommodation has been provided in the Laboratory with especial reference to class of Experimental and Analytical Chemistry intended to meet the growing demands for the practical application of that science and to provide the Agriculturist and Manufacturer as well as the professed Student with instruction in this import- ant branch of knowledge The office of Demonstrator of Chemistry having become vacant by Dr Miller's promotion has been filled up by the appointment of Bowman Esq
