annual report 181G Occasional Students In the various Classes exclusive of the Medical G3 In the Medical Classes 22 School Pupils 502 Making total of 955 receiving Instruction within the College The Council have the satisfaction of believing that this increase of numbers is attributable to an increased confidence in the original principles of the Institution to the system of instruction pursued to the reputation of the Professors and Masters and to the general character which the College enjoys as well with respect to the industry and good conduct of its present members as to the distinguished success of those who have gone forth from its walls The Department of General Literature and Science continues to receive reflected honour from its Students when removed to the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge At Cambridge during the present year Mr Ilensley was Senior Wrangler and first Smith's Prizeman and four other Students Were Wranglers one was placed in the First Class in Classics six obtained Fellowships two in Trinity College and four in other Colleges of that University At Oxford two have been elected Students of Christ Church The anticipations which the Council expressed in their last Report respecting the Department of the Applied Sciences have been fully realized The number of Students has been nearly doubled and there is reason to hope that in proportion as the value of system which combines scientific with prac- tical instruction shall have been confirmed by the approval of eminent Engineers the efficiency of this Department will be still more extended The Medical Department has fully supported its character during the past year the number of Students is increasing and their deportment and industry have been with very few exceptions perfectly satisfactory
